Heading to Roots Hall for the Southend v Northampton match I alighted at Prittlewell and fell imediately into the Railway Tavern. A pub without aspiration it was raised above the dreadful by the cracking pre-match atmosphere.
The Spread Eagle looked more promising and so it proved. A decent selection of ale let down slightly by the plastic ‘glasses’ in which the match day drinks were served.
Northampton missed an early penalty and had a player sent off in the first half of what went on to be a comfortable 2-0 win for the home side.
